August 15, 2002

I had an odd dream last night. I was lost in a forest for what seemed like forever when out of nowhere a white fox appeared. I was suddenly overcome with the feeling that it wanted me to follow it and so I did. It lead me right to a clearing and just stood there for moment and looked at me, then I swear I saw it blink before it ran off. I made my way through the clearing and safely made it home. It must have been my eyes playing tricks on me when I woke up because when I looked out my window I thought I saw the very same white fox from my dream. Maybe I was still dreaming. The really odd thing though is when I told my aunt Fauna about it she got this kind of surprised look on her face and suddenly had to excuse herself to go do something important. So much for that conversation, a bit odd too if you ask me

August 12, 2002

Today is my 11th birthday. My aunt Fauna gave me this journal as a gift. She said that writing can be a magical thing, I'm not exactly sure about that. I'm not very creative and I don't have a very exciting life to write about. I would rather read than write, I love to read and also to learn. Anything that will take my mind away from this boring old world I live in. I guess it's not horrible but nothing ever happens here in the suburbs. I live in a neighborhood where an unkempt lawn is frowned upon, seriously. Well since this is my journal maybe I should write a little something about myself.

My name is Paisley Pendegraph. I live with my aunt Fauna Irpinia and cousin Beatrix. My mom died while giving birth and my father didn't feel fit to raise a child on his own. Maybe some day I will understand why. Sometimes I feel like my aunt and cousin are keeping secrets from me, I often hear them whispering or they will stop talking when I come into the same room then resume talking as soon as I leave. I often wonder if it's about my father. Who knows. They're very secretive like that. Moving on. Like I said, today was my birthday. We celebrated with orange cream cake, orange sorbet, sour orange sweets, and orange fizzy drink (something special my aunt makes)! I LOVE orange. I'm not sure why but I've always been drawn to it and it just so happens to be the greatest flavor too! I wish my hair was orange but it's not, it's a very pale, almost white blonde. I keep it short because I hate messing with long hair. I have two different colored eyes which just makes me stand out even more, my aunt says it's a rare trait that I should be proud of. Tell that to the kids at school. People already think I'm weird because I'm head of the class in pretty much every subject. Needless to say I mostly keep to myself.

School starts soon, I'm already dreading it. My cousin on the other hand, she can hardly wait. I would be excited too if I were one of the popular kids. She doesn't say anything mean about me which is nice and if someone really lays into me she will tell them off but as far as letting me hang out with her and her group of friends, I honestly have a better chance of being accepted into a pack of wolves, a pride of lions even. I don't understand what it is about me? Sure we have different tastes, I like learning and sticking my nose in a good book, and she likes fancy clothes and makeup. We get along at home though, at least I think we do. Then again, I guess people who hardly talk to each other would get along just fine. We used to be close when we were younger. We would run up this giant hill near the neighborhood park and watch the clouds float by and take turns telling each other what they look like. I miss those days.
